Rating: - Sounds good, pricey
I loved the silver FX versions of these speakers. At $230 plus shipping it is in a tough and pricey group. I was able to snag some PT's at $140pp, and at that price point they are marvelous. None of its ~$100to$200 competitors were strong in mid range, this one uses an interesting approach with its stack of small speakers acousticaly staggered to imitate a large speaker. I like these better than the Z2300's which were running $110-130. At the $200+ price point there are a lot of variables, not the least of which are enviromental/setup. I like the remote, as they may move over to a home theater set up at some point.
Rating: - Horrible Junk!
I had a set of Altec's 2.1 FX6021. They were incredible. The music was pure joy to listen to. I never would use an equalizer because everyone I tried only lessened the fantastic sound of the FX6021 set.
However, bad things happened to the speaker system during a lightning storm. A surge made them kaput. So, trusting Altec's new PT6021 system to be the same or better, I purchased them. The satellites sounded tinny with absolutely no body at all to the mid range or highs. They sounded as bad as a cheap table radio. Matter of fact, I think they sounded worse than that.
The bass was nonexistant. The sub woofer didn't even work. However, even if it had and was decent enough, it could never have compensated for the tinny sound of the satellite speakers. I've asked for a return order. DON'T even begin to consider this lemon system. Altec ruined a fantastic system. Oh, yeah, the manual is now the size of your hand and printed in type so small only someone with the eyesight of a fighter pilot could read it without a magnifying glass.
Horrible disappointment.
Rating: - Lack of midrange...
The highs on these speakers are great, but SERIOUSLY LACKING on the mids. No matter how low I turn the bass down with the control, the subwoofer is too boomy. I have the Altec Lansing MX5021 and they sound MUCH better than these (too bad Altec discontinued them). These speakers are not up to my expectation for the price and are way too over-priced for a simple 2.1 system.
Rating: - Dead And No Help
These hideously expensive speakers died after about 6 months. To repair them they want me to ship these heavy speakers to them, at my expense.
Instead, I think I'll put them in the trash and buy speakers from someone who will support their product. Do NOT buy from Altec Lansing.
