Rating: - Superb and happy so far...
I concur with the majority that I have had great success so far. I only rate 4 instead of 5 because a) I have not successfully scanned a doc into a Word.doc yet - and I hope to be able to do that, and b) I have not actually used the duplex function BUT I trust that it works based on other feedback.
re: L Simon's concern with fax and extension phone
I am not sure whether I have this same set up BUT I have never had this problem. My phone attaches to the Printer and the Printer attaches to the wall. I believe this is the correct way to set it up. I have a tri-function RF45 Jack and my computer modem (which I don't use) attaches separately. I have had no problems in this regard.
Rating: - Good printer but with some irritating limitations
This printer is small and prints well, and is quiet. For the price it is probably a very good laser multifunction - and I really like it's ability to do double sided printing, but does have some limitations and quirks that I find irritating:
- No ability to quickly cancel a print job. All my prior printers (several HP laser and ink jet models) had a button to cancel the current print job - useful to stop multi-page printing started in error or if you change your mind. This printer can only do that through a lengthy and complicated process of going through menus on its LCD - no quick cancel button. I was surprised that hitting the "Stop" button didn't do it.
- Fax doesn't really share line with home phone. While it has a setting for this it only works with a phone connected to the printer, not an extension phone on the same line. If you answer a voice call on an extension phone the MF4150 starts an irritating ringing on the line after a few seconds, regardless if it was a voice or fax call. So to avoid this you have to set the machine for manual receive or put on a dedicated line. My last fax was 10 years old and stopped trying to answer a call if you picked up an extension when set to line sharing. I don't think many people will only have one single line phone, connected through this printer, in their whole house or office.
I've also had problems getting the scan software to automatically scan dark enough with one touch scanning (you can change settings if initiating from your computer but not if initiating a one-touch scan from the MF4150). Forms in the single sheet feeder seldom feed straight. Also have had some USB driver problems which I'll admit I haven't tried to track down between the computer or printer, nor have I called support on this.
Overall - not bad for the price but I would have looked further if I'd known about these limitations.
Rating: - Glad I went with this one
We were originally looking at all-in-one color inkjets. But with the ink so expensive and our use for color so low, we decided on a laser. We just kept our old inkjet and if we need anything nicer than what it can handle, we will just take it to Kinko's or Staples. I'm really glad we made this decision. The laser has been fabulous. Really fast, and the ink lasts forever compared to an inkjet.
The Canon was easy to set up. No terrible bloatware with it. Looks nice. I didn't initially like that the paper tray had to be open when there was paper in it (took up more room and didn't look as clean), but we have found that if we don't keep the tray too full, we can still close it. The paper has a slight bend to it, but not really noticeable.
I didn't think the duplexing would be a big deal, but I have found that I really do like it. The text quality is soooo much better than an inkjet. Whenever the Canon has been sitting unused for more than a minute or so, it goes into energy saver mode. In this mode, it is basically off. No sound. No motion. No power to any of the buttons. Until the computer tells it to print something, or until you push the energy saver button. Very nice feature. I don't have to worry about turning it on or off. When the computer tells it to print, it starts within a couple of seconds . And I really like that the buttons don't work unless you push the energy saver button since my son just can't help but touch every button he can find right now and the energy saver button looks enough like a light, that he has pushed every button but that one.
Scanning works great. My husband has made lots of PDFs from his scans. I did have a slight problem with the scanner being so powerful that it has a tendency to pick up anything on the other side the page, but I'm sure that with a little practice I'll find the right setting to prevent it from happening. The fax machine prints out a report if the fax didn't go through, but it doesn't give any hard copy notification when the fax does go through. It caused me a little anxiety the first time since I didn't know if I had everything hooked up okay, but now that I know it worked, I found that there is a system monitor which allows you to check the status manually. We use VOIP and had no trouble faxing. In fact, it was hooked up into the second line on our VOIP adapter. Only problem was, it picked up before our phone. So we'll have to hook it up in tandem after the phone/answering machine. My husband sent me a fax to let me know it was picking up before the phone so I could unplug it. Now we know we can receive faxes just fine.
We were originally debating between a Brother Laser and the Canon. I'm glad we went with the Canon. We did want the network ability for our home network, which doesn't work as well with the USB, but all we needed was a USB/Ethernet connector for a few bucks and then it was just fine with our router. We can even print wirelessly with our laptop.
Overall, the Canon looks and feels solid, is quiet, fast, and efficient.

Comparing this product to other laserprinter I used before, this printer is very quite while it's in energy-saving mode (it go saving mode while you don't use it for a minute). Moreover, while you print something, the first page show up in 10 secs. I choose this one because of its 2-side printing function, and after testing it, I think this one whould be a one of the best ROI (Return on Investment) one I bought before.
If you need 2-side printing & once a while copy/fax function, this product should fits you need. I have not yet test its FAX function because I don't need it.
Anyway, I think this printer worth its price. By the way, I use Windows Vista, so I believe it is vista compatible.
