After trying a Maxtor harddrive and having the indexing on my mac so screwed up i had to erase everything and reboot the operating system, I went for teh most reliable thing out there. After a bit of research I heard teh Lacie drive was best--and they even USE them in the Apple stores. It works, is quite, and is well worth the cost. it comes with 3 types of cables too. buy it!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Great Storage Solution... So Far
I recently purchased the LaCie 160 and have successfully (and easily) transferred about 20 gb of data from my computer's hard drive and my old collection of Iomega Zip Disks using my Apple PowerBook G4. The transfers were all accomplished without any problems, and at a pretty fast rate. I've also moved some files from CDs that I've burned, to simplify the task of finding old files. The LaCie is a good looking, compact unit that I hope will reliably store my files for a long, long time. I like the fact that it doesn't require any external power sources when plugged into my PowerBook using a firewire connection. A friend has recommended that I still burn CDs to back-up important files, since the lifespan of a mechanical Hard Drive is less than a CD. But I feel a lot more confident that the files I place in the LaCie will be more safely saved than the files I previously stored on Zip Disks. I highly recommend this LaCie hard drive storage device. On a Mac, it's easy to set up and easy to use.

    Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It's OK
After dropping my beautiful, but evidently not very rugged lacie porsche drive and finding that it was instantly dead, I needed a new portable drive with decent capacity to shuttle between the office and home. (I keep an evolving backup on the portable drive, and keep all the machines in sync this way)
The rugged drive seemed like a good bet-- a little expensive and small in storage capacity, but maybe a little more robust than the porsche drive, to fulfill a similar purpose.
    The pros:
    -- it's quiet
-- both USB and firewire, and bus powered
-- I'm hoping that it's robust to a short drop, but not planning on testing this...

    The cons:
-- only in orange. I don't mind orange, but I liked the silver porsche drive, and wouldn't have minded a less conspicuous design for this one.
-- the rubber surrounding is kind of loose, it's really just wrapped around the sides, not very huggy at all. this struck me as totally cheap and disappointing. it's just a little drive in this "scarf", kind of like the bumpers were tacked on as an afterthought :(
-- it gets very hot, much hotter than the porsche drive did.
-- for USB bus power, you have to plug in two USB cables. a real hassle on a powerbook with USB ports on opposite sides. :(

Overall, I'm satisfied with its functionality, but don't find much to be excited about. I had been hoping to see some innovative designs, larger capacities, and price reductions in the portable drive market since the last time I bought one a few years ago, but this drive has very much a status quo kind of feel.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fast!
I am using this drive as an extension of my MacBook Pro. I use it for only two purposes: to hold 80G of iTunes music, and as a scratch disk for Final Cut Express.

When I got the drive, I decided to run an informal test. I moved 6GB of music from my MBP to a USB 2.0 drive. I then moved the same files to the LaCie using the FW800 cable. As should be the case, the drive took exactly half the time of the USB.

It's my first LaCie product. It's fast. It's quiet. I'm happy.
