I received this unit from Amazon last week just as I was departing for a long weekend. Yesterday, I started the install process. I was fortunate in that I already had a cable lead to a defunct DirecTV antenna installation on the third floor of my house. I removed the existing satellite antenna and, using the mounting shaft of that antenna, I installed the receiving monopole antenna.
On the first floor, I attached the base unit in the room I use most often, where the former DirecTV cable terminated.
My AT&T Tilt phone normally rests in that room with line-of-sight to the base unit. In this location, I used to have one bar on the signal strength, now I have at least three. Formerly, I would have problems with calls being dropped .. early evidence is that this is no longer an issue.
BTW, the signal strength compares well with what I measured with the phone at the receiving location, which is expected, i.e. you are bringing the outside signal strength in.
On the downside, when I take my phone several rooms away, it gets about the same signal strength that it did before installation. Intervening walls do seem to attenuate the signal. If you had one large open room, I suspect you'd be fine anywhere in that room, but that's probably the only way you'll get anywhere near the 2500 sq ft coverage that is mentioned in the promotional materials.
Next, I'm going to mount the base unit high up on the wall and see what effect that has. First, I've got to buy a small shelf to allow that since there is no easy way to wall mount the base unit. I might also try to elevate the receiving antenna so it clears the roof in all directions.
I'm quite happy with my purchase, but if you don't have a good signal at the receiving antenna, this device will not do much for you.

This thing is really great! I work in a metal building that is quite a ways from the nearest cell tower, with several hills between us and the tower. Before we bought this amplifier we had to run outside into the parking lot to be able to maintain a conversation. We installed the outside antenna on the roof and the amplifier in the telephone closet and now we have full signal in our offices, which is better than we have in the parking lot. Highly recommended.

Yes it does work if you have cell signals hitting your roof area. Before buying, I went into the attic and checked that I was receiving a good enough cell signal on my phone (3-4 bars). We have a two story home. I installed it in the attic, at the top of the roof line and ran the cable through a hole I drilled in a closet ceiling. I was concerned that I needed to bring the cable all the way to the first floor, but when I connected the sending unit upstairs in the bedroom, I received a good enough signal downstairs in the family room that I just kept the unit there and had a very simple install. There are still weak areas in our house where calls are dropped and during peak times when outside signal strength is low, we only get 1-2 bars inside, but just getting calls downstairs is a big improvement for us. If I wanted to move the sending unit downstairs I think I could make it work better. After 10+ years of frustration with lack of cell phone signal I am very pleased to have found this product!

if you have call drops, this product is for you.
I am really happy with the result. I have at least 2 bars now, in a basement where I never got one bar.
