We are disappointed with the external drive. The package did not have directions and our son deleted all of his photos before he realized that he was using the drive incorrectly. I used it to back up my laptop with little success. The laptop kept freezing and turning itself off. The external drive seems to overheat the computer. I will buy another external drive; however, it will be a different brand as this one did not do the job for us.

I use this drive as a backup for backup. My primary backup device has been another western digital passport drive for the past 2 years and it has served me good except for one time when I disconnected the usb cable while doing an rsync and without stopping the device and could not recover any of the data. Ever since, I have been careful not to do that and have had no issues. I hope the same reliability in this new drive.
The best thing about this is that it is so small that you can carry it in your pocket. It would have been good to have had a longer USB cable, but I use the longer cable I had with my older drive, so no issues there either.
Overall, a good buy for the price if you value compactness.

This drive is great. It's pretty fast during routine operations (transferring files, playing games from it), it's extremely portable, and looks pretty spanking good. Recognized instantly by both my Mac and PC. One minor complaint, though: it gets covered in dust very quickly under my iMac, but a wipe with a damp cloth works fine.
